We were delighted to host a second joint event recently with The Institute of Management Consultants and Advisors (IMCA) with keynote speaker David Duffy, founder and CEO of The Governance Company.
Kieran Redmond of Bank of Ireland College Green opened the event and welcomed CAIM and IMCA members to the BOI Grand Canal Innovation Centre.
David Duffy gave an interesting informative talk on “The NED Journey” outlining the pathway, opportunities and risks for members of becoming a Non-Executive Director. With approximately 70% of appointments coming via people you know, it’s vital to keep your network warm and remain visible in the market place. But patience and caution are advised.
His key tips when considering whether to accept a NED role were:
- don’t say yes immediately;
- check out the company;
- ask questions, use Google etc.;
- consider if there is any litigation pending; and
- understand the shareholding.
David Duffy is standing for the forthcoming election to the council of Chartered Accountants Ireland. His governance and diversity focus are well aligned with CAIM’s agenda – supporting mature FCA’s in a tough marketplace for seniors.
Patrick Byrne (CAIM Chairman) and Denis McCarthy (IMCA CEO) announced a great value offer for members of CAIM and IMCA to become Affiliate Members of each other’s organisation and take advantage of events and CPD for an annual fee of €75. These shared memberships will also provide extra networking opportunities; vital for self-employed independent professionals of all disciplines.
